K-9 Unit
With tremendous community support, the Pickens Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the addition of a K9 Unit. With the financial contributions from the citizens of Pickens County, the Sheriff’s Office has been able to purchase a multi-purpose K-9, equip a vehicle, and designate the handler for Pickens County’s fist K-9 Unit.
Sgt Brandon Merritt is currently on the road with our newest Deputy, Blecky. Blecky is a multi purpose Sheppard that is trained in Area Search, Building Search, Aggression Control, and Narcotic Detection.
Sgt Merritt and Blecky recently trained in Titusville Florida with Jan Scofield. Detective Scofield is a Master Trainer with the North American Police Work Dog Association and has over 35 years experience with K9 training. Detective Scofield has trained over 500 K9 teams throughout his career.
The CodeRED system gives county officials the ability to deliver pre-recorded emergency telephone notification/information messages to targeted areas or the entire city at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour. It also allows callers to receive severe weather warnings on the telephone as soon as they are issued by the National Weather Service. This is especially important as the tornado sirens are not able tobe heard inside a residence or at all in most locations.
