Explorers

The Pickens Sheriff Explorers Post 800 was established in March 2007 and is led by Corporal Chris Leake. The Explorer program is designed for youth, ages 14 to 21, who are interested in the field of law enforcement and have a desire to develop leadership and teamwork skills that will help them later in life. Youth who are a part of the Pickens County Sheriff Explorers will participate in: weekly training meetings, conference trips in and out of state and competitions against other Explorer Posts in and out of state.

Pickens County Explorer Post 800 prides itself in having youth who will  “go the extra mile” to represent Pickens County. In order for a youth to join they must meet certain requirements which are: must be ages 14 to 21, have a GPA of at least 2.0, can not have any arrests or serious traffic violations, must be able to pass a background check, must be willing to wear and maintain a uniform and must be of good moral character. The CodeRED system gives county officials the ability to deliver pre-recorded emergency telephone notification/information messages to targeted areas or the entire city at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour. It also allows callers to receive severe weather warnings on the telephone as soon as they are issued by the National Weather Service. This is especially important as the tornado sirens are not able tobe heard inside a residence or at all in most locations.
